Becoming the Person God
Designed You to Be
By George Sosich
You’ve probably heard the old saying “no two snowflakes are alike.” It’s not just a saying; it has its basis in actual science. Out of the innumerable snowflakes that have ever fallen throughout history, no two have been exactly alike, despite the fact that they all have the same basic six-sided symmetrical shape. What a mind-blowing fact! God’s amazingly intricate design and craftsmanship at work.
This is also true of us humans. We all have the same basic anatomy and biological makeup. Yet, out of the billions of humans that have ever lived, there has never been another one exactly like you. You are a completely unique creation of God.
This idea is reflected in a fascinating biblical passage in which the prophet King David expresses his wonderment at the incredible thought God put into creating him.
You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body
and knit me together in my mother’s womb.
Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex!
Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it.
You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion,
as I was woven together in the dark of the womb.
You saw me before I was born.
Every day of my life was recorded in your book.
Every moment was laid out
before a single day had passed.
How precious are your thoughts about me, O God.
They cannot be numbered!
I can’t even count them;
they outnumber the grains of sand!
—Psalm 139:13–181
Think of it. God, like a master craftsman or artist, has intricately designed and purposefully created you to be the person you are: someone with a unique personality and gifts and talents to contribute to those around you.
There is just one problem. Unlike the snowflake which naturally forms so beautifully in the atmosphere with no will of its own, we possess free will, and this has a lot to do with determining whether we reach our God-given potential.
So how do we become this person God designed us to be? Second Corinthians 5:17 tells us, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.”2 Once you have accepted Jesus as your Savior, you have become “born again” as a new person, one who has started on an exciting journey of learning and growing in your thinking and living the way God intends for you personally. This transformation from the old you to the new you is the process by which you become the person God designed you to be. And the key to your success in this endeavor is found within the verse itself—“in Christ.”
First, we must be willing to be remade. Romans 12:1–2 says: “Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”3
Once we yield our bodies, minds, and spirits to Him, we become so immersed in Him that He can live, think, and act through us. Some ways to do this are:
- Read and study His Word, the Bible, and other inspirational and instructional Christian material daily.
- Maintain a consistent prayer life, including praise, thankfulness, and hearing His voice speak to you.
- Allow Him to be part of every area of your life. Seek His mind on what you should be doing, as well as how you should do it. Seek His mind about your relationships with the people in your life.
- Reflect on the events of your life so that you learn valuable lessons as you go.
- Have regular worship and fellowship with like-minded, dedicated Christians.
- Actively seek mentoring, guidance, and constructive criticism from trusted spiritually strong Christian friends and associates.
- Recognize that life is a learning process, whereby you are meant to gain wisdom and knowledge of His ways and learn to put these into practice in your everyday life.
As you put the above into practice, your mind and spirit will slowly transform from the old you to the new you, the unique and wonderful you that God designed you to be. You’ll be thrilled to see how much God has developed your character and gifts and talents and made you an effective witness and force for good in your family, community, company, or wherever you might be. What’s more, you’ll have the peace and satisfaction of knowing that you’re fulfilling His destiny for your life and that one day you will hear His commendation, “Well done, my good and faithful servant.”4
